It has been close to two years since I created the Helping
Movement, hundreds of people have been helped, thousands of visitors have
been inspired, and I can safely say Ithaca is a little more supportive
because of this movement. I noticed many times it isn’t that people didn’t
want to help people in need; it was that they didn’t have a way of
connecting with these individuals. The Helping Movement filled this void by
providing a process, better yet, a motivation for people to ask their
community for help and a way for volunteers to help these people in need.
There is no single word that can describe the emotions you experience after
helping someone who needs you more than anything else in the world, helping
a total stranger for nothing more than a simple thank you. It is one of the
greatest feelings, one you can continue to experience, simply by helping
others.
The Helping Movement was an independent idea that I created and managed over the years, but now it is time for me to move on to new and exciting opportunities. The end of the Helping Movement website is not an excuse for you not to continue to help people in need, but an opportunity for you to openly look for people who need your support, and without hesitation or compensation, offer your help. Thank you for your dedication to strengthening our community and turning an unconventional idea into a reality – People helping people, it’s simple. Please feel free to contact me with questions, ideas, and of course, if you need help. Your friend, Ryan McGuire
